The following pictures may give you an impression of the place and how we actually saw it first and fell in love with it. All interior was from the pre-owner who passed away some years ago. As we will soon find out, he was the first and only person to live here. So we bought it first hand.

If you know us you will quickly see why we labelled this a fixxer upper. Hence, four points that need to be done before the actual move end of August.

Kitchen: Get out

Step one is pretty straight forward. At least planning the new kitchen is finished, before the place is finally ours. Thanks to IKEA, the Kitchen Planner and eight culinary dreams we already realized for friends and family. But before you can build a new kitchen in one place you need to get rid of the old one. That's plain physics. Or better, it is missing physical attraction between kitchen cabinets, countertop and our taste.

Craigslist

So: Out with it. But how? Back in Germany there is something called Ebay Kleinanzeigen, where you can locally offer goods and people can buy it, and there where Flea markets. About our success with both of these medias we already have a post online. However, Canada offers something similar and it is called Craigslist. With the help of Crigslist you can get anything: clothing and decoartion, a new job or furniture, maybe even a new love or herpes. Well, we have a kitchen for sale. Unfortunately the physical attraction is not only absent in the face of ourselves. No one is willing to pay money for a 30 year old kitchen. I don't know why! ;-) Only the fridge finds a new home and brings us the fortune of CAD 80. This means, we must offer the rest of the kitchen for free: cabinets, dishwasher, oven and hood. And what can I say, we almost got rid of it all. Most spectacular however, was the guy picking up the oven and hood. His truck was already packed, but this did not stop him and his bondage-abilities. Well, maybe bondage is not the right word ... or maybe it is!?

Finally cabinets and dishwasher are picked up as well. Though only half of the cabinets are moved to the Island. The rest ended up on our parking lot in the garage, just as some other stuff did.

Most important, the kitchen is empty and ready for step two.

Off the Walls

When we first saw this place we instantly screamed inside, we will have to tear down this wall. Hence we checked and asked everyone whether this one might go or not. Everyone said: sure, no problem, piece of cake.

Desperatly Seeking a Contractor

However, this cake shocked me with its sugar. Researching regulations about how to renovate something in a condo is like using google to check your flue symptoms. It stresses you out. Basic ingredients: a permit for everything, accompanied by engineered drawings before and after. All this will be processed by your humble civil servant within a convenient time of ten to twelve weeks saying Yay or Nay. The frosting is made of pure money. Furthermore, a small cake like removing one wall is not on top of the list for most contractors. They are more into renovating a whole complex with apartments. Well, I was not amused.

Me – who is well known for being extremely capable of coping with those situations – can already see myself painting the wall and looking for wall decor. But one last chance is left. Why not ask our realtor Silvia. In the end she has good taste and probably has some ideas on wall decor and wall color ... Or, maybe, if we get lucky, she might know some contractor who is also willing to do small jobs like this. An what can I say ... we got lucky. The contractor arrives at the same day after work and has a look at our project. Great. By the way, this is what all the fuzz is about. This thing must either go or shrink:

Umbau im Schnelldurchlauf

Wir besprechen zahlreiche Optionen, begutachten den Dachboden direkt über uns, um zu schauen, ob es sich um tragende Wände handelt und sprechen über das Prozedere an sich. Es ist alles nicht so aufregend, wie ich es dachte, was meinen Puls wieder auf ein gesundes Level brachte. Als Zeitfenster handeln wir drei Wochen aus, in denen jede Menge passiert. Eine Wand verschwindet, Fliesen stürzen und neue Kabel werden verlegt:

Am Ende ist die komplette Wand raus. Die in der Wand befindlichen Lichtschalter wurden verlegt in die Flurwand. Der gesamte Wohnraum ist dadurch grösser und offener. Ein voller Erfolg:

Fussboden: Einmal schick, bitte

Alte Küchenmöbel sind verschenkt, Wohnraum ist geöffnet. Doch bevor die Küche endlich in neuem Glanz erscheinen kann, braucht es noch eine solide Basis. Sprich: Der Boden muss getauscht werden.

Den Richtigen finden

Anhand eines kleinen Streifens Vinyls oder Laminats eine Vorstellung davon zu bekommen, wie der gesamte Raum mit dem Fussbodenbelag aussehen würde. Dieses Talent ist mir nicht gegeben. Daher vertraue ich da voll und ganz auf Rico, der selbige Kompetenz entweder besitzt oder sehr überzeugend eine entsprechende Kompetenz simulieren kann.

Wir entscheiden uns für ein wasserdichtes und kratzfestes Vinyl. Verlegt wird das ganze von unserem Handwerker. Anstatt den bestehende Boden jedoch heruaszureissen, wird das Vinyl einfach obendrauf gelegt. Das spart Geld und Zeit und davon hat man ja bekanntlich nie genug. Das Zwischen- und auch das Endergebnis kann sich durchaus sehen lassen.

Unser Parkplatz beinhaltet mittlerweile folgendes: demontierte Küchenschränke, Trockenbauwände in vorschriftsmässig verschlossenen Abfallsäcken und jede Menge Pappkartons. Den Müll gilt es nun zu entsorgen. Und dafür gibt es hier auch ein Haus. Ein Müllhaus sozusagen:

Küche: Einmal neu, bitte

Schritt vier: Neue Küche bauen. Elektrogeräte sind bereits bestellt und trudeln nach und nach ein, noch während die Bauarbeiten anhalten. Kühlschrank, Ofen, Herd, Geschirrspülmaschine, Dunstabzug. Am Ende fehlen nur noch die Schränke und die gibt es bekanntermaßen bei IKEA. Die liefern ja zum Glück. Und würden auch aufbauen, aber nee Freunde. Den Spaß lassen wir uns nicht nehmen. Die Küchenschränke sind schnell aufgebaut und zusammengestellt.

Der eigentliche Spaß geht dann erst los. Eine erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit basiert ja bekanntlich auf einer einstimmigen Kommunikation. Dies gilt – wie wir feststellen durften – auch und vor allem für Maßangaben. Kanadier verwirren ja die Menschheit mit ihrer Inkonsequenz beim Thema. So werden große Entfernungen in Meter und Kilometer gemessen, bei kleineren Abmessungen werden Inches verwendet. So auch beim Küchenbau, was Rico periodisch zu spontanen Wutausbrüchen veranlasste.

Die Arbeitsplatte muss aufgelegt, ausgerichtet und zurecht geschnitten werden. Elektrogeräte müssen eingebaut werden. Am Ende müssen die Deckplatten zugesägt und montiert, Zierleisten angebracht sowie Wandfliesen gefliest werden, um das Ganze abzurunden. Die Bilder zeigen einen Zwischenstand der Arbeiten.

Am Ende sieht das ganze dann recht ordentlich aus und bietet genügend Stauraum und jede Menge Arbeitsfläche. Ich finde, so kann man leben. Die Beleuchtung lässt sich dimmen und bietet sowohl Kalt-, als auch Warmweiss. So hat man je nach Stimmung und Bedarf die richtige Beleuchtung zur Hand. Gesteuert per App. Natürlich!
