Pitt Lake

In June we go on a first small canoe trip on Pitt Lake near Vancouver in British Columbia.

Time flies when you're having fun. That's why it's been a little while since we published an activity report here. We'd like to remedy that and report on some recent adventures, including a trip to Pitt Lake.

It's June 20, 2018, the sun is blazing and we cram ourselves into a car-sharing vehicle with friends and head northwest. Pitt Lake awaits us there. Since we have never heard of this blue spot, we assume that we can rent a canoe there without any problems. The approach to the lake lets us already guess that this is a very popular recreation area, because the road is lined with cars and boat trailers. And the closer we get, the more crowded it becomes. We didn't expect that ... wow! Okay, it's the second largest lake here, and you can tell.

Full of courage we strut in the direction of the canoe rental. In front of us is a family. This family actually snatches the last canoes right from under our noses. Just like that. Scandalous! The round woman at the canoe rental is noticeably bored and annoyed that people want to take advantage of the offer and actually want to rent canoes. On our question, when it would make sense to come by again, she only said: Around three o'clock the first boats come back ... So well. Then we just walk a little through the beautiful landscape.

3 p.m. Drenched in sweat, we reach the canoe rental shop and actually receive two canoes. The enthusiasm of the obese rental woman is limited. Instruction in the use of the canoes? What for. We find life jackets and paddles ourselves, which could only elicit a snort or grunt from Madame. We don't care. We launch the canoes - there is no documentation about this process - and glide elf-like over the calm waters of Pitt Lake.

At the campsite we take a short break. The way back holds a small or furry surprise. At the riverbank a brown bear accompanies us for quite a while. Roams through the undergrowth and is rarely to be seen. Shortly thereafter he crosses the river only a few meters behind us. Exciting! A real adventure.
